"The military played polo. Polo really started as a game to train for war."
- Nacho Figueras
The Military Equestrian Foundation (MEF) is a non-profit organization, founded by veterans, that aims to provide a respite for battle weary veterans and their families by offering constructive equine activities and sports to its members. MEF’s goal is to create a sanctuary for its members to learn and return to the art of love and open communication not only in life but in the relationships, we encounter each day. Set in the Virginia horse-country, our programs allow our members the opportunity to escape the trials of life and find themselves a beautiful serene getaway where they can interact with each other and engage with the horses stabled on our farm, whether it’s an escape of a few hours or the entire weekend. We are thankful for the opportunity to be in a position to help active duty and retired service members and their families from all walks of life, to conquer their personal growth challenges, transforming their struggles and burdens into opportunities. As veterans who have returned home from dangerous and lengthy deployments in combat zones, the founding members of the MEF understand first-hand the often difficult task of re-entry into “normal” life with family and friends upon returning from deployment or separating from the service.

The MEF is located just a short distance from the heart of Washington DC, nestled in the beautiful countryside of The Plains, Virginia, near Middleburg horse country. With 12 horses on a farm consisting of approximately 150 acres, an arena, a round pin, multiple stables, a grass field, and a legion of volunteers, MEF offers a safe and relaxing environment for program participants. There are many ways horses support growth and healing, and MEF ensures these services are offered in a safe and ethical manner by highly trained and qualified professionals (both horses and humans).
The reason why military service members can relate to the sport of polo is because of its military background. A version of polo was played as training for war and used to teach one leadership, teamwork, and strategy as well as improve the riding skills of cavalrymen. Polo is not only the oldest team sport known but an active avenue for your brain, releasing stress and providing a thrill like adrenaline rush. The United States Polo Association (USPA) and its Armed Services Committee has been a significant factor in facilitating the formation of military polo through tournaments requiring military participation such as the Commander-in-Chief Cup, General George S. Patton Jr. Cup, Admiral Chester W. Nimitz Cup, and others that are hosted annually around the U.S. Currently, the MEF and Army Polo Club partner together annually from April to November to host weekend club chukkers and tournaments for both field and arena polo.
